January 1st MRV Fee Increase
Since September 11, 2001, various security measures have been implemented to
help secure U.S. borders while facilitating legitimate travel. The Machine
Readable Visa (MRV) fee paid by all nonimmigrant visa applicants helps to offset
much of the visa processing cost and make the application process as quick and
efficient as possible.
Effective January 1, 2008 the application fee for a U.S. nonimmigrant visa (a
category which includes tourist, student, work and other visa types) will
increase from US$100 to US$131 worldwide, including in the Dominican Republic. Please
note that this fee also applies to K visa applicants (interviewed by the
Immigrant Visa Unit).
Those applicants who paid the prior US$100 application fee before January 1,
2008 will require no further payment if their interview is scheduled on or
before January 31, 2008.
Applicants who paid the prior US$100 application fee and appear for visa
interviews after January 31, 2008 must pay the difference -- US$31 -- at any
Banco Popular branch prior to the date of their interview. Please bring all
your receipts to your interview.
Any payments made after January 1, 2008, regardless of the interview date, must
be for the full US$131 fee. So if you are paying for your interview anytime in
January, you will have to pay the US$131 fee.
