Complete and Correct Documents Expedite the Passport Application Process

To apply for a U.S. passport, certain documents are required.  To avoid repeated trips to the Consular Section, it is imperative to understand what documents are relevant.

To receive a passport, an applicant must present proof of U.S. citizenship and proof of identity (e.g., evidence that the proof of U.S. citizenship belongs to that applicant).

Applicants who are applying for a passport for the first-time must bring in significant proof of citizenship and identity.  The process for first-time applicants applying overseas is much more demanding than the application process in the United States.  Due to the high level of fraud, we must take measures to protect against identity theft and imposters.

In addition to the birth certificate and other required documents, parents of first-time applicants under the age of 18 should provide the medical records regarding their child’s birth in the United States, namely the actual discharge papers from the hospital where the child was born. We do not accept letters from the hospital, ID tags from the hospital or baby cards. If you do not have these medical records, you should contact the hospital where the child was born to request them.  Alternatively, we may accept photographs of the birth of the applicant as long as the photos clearly indicate that the baby was born in the United States (e.g., the name of the hospital is clearly visible in the picture).

First-time passport applicants under the age of 18 should also present photos of themselves at different ages from birth to present, especially photos in the United States.  First-time applicants under the age of 18 should also provide school and/or vaccination records from birth to present.

Applicants who have changed in appearance significantly since their last passport may be required to show photos of themselves through the years since the issuance of their last passport (in order to prove that they are the same person with the expired passport).
