The
International Visitors selected for the current fiscal year have
participated or will participate in the following programs:
Counterterrorism Issues and Regional Cooperation
– This project
will examine the implications of the FTAA and the pros and cons of
the agreement from the perspectives of various industries,
agricultural and high technology sectors in the U.S. and Latin
America.
Promoting Service and Volunteerism
– This
project will look at the historical and growing importance of
community service and volunteerism in the U.S.. The program will
address how ethical, social and moral values form the basis for the
cast array of human services provided in the U.S. American
traditions of volunteerism and the impact of volunteers and their
civic efforts both locally and internationally will be addressed.
US Trade Policy and the World Economy
–
Participants
will explore a variety of U.S. perspectives on trade by meeting with
business, government, labor, academic, and media representatives.
The program will explain U.S. trade interest policies, institutions,
and their relationship to domestic, political, economic, social, and
cultural factors.

–
Participants will learn about current U.S. policy on international
crime issues, including prevention methodologies, and cooperation
among various law enforcement agencies in combating criminal
activity.
Combating International Crime
– This project
will explore some of the causes and effects of trafficking of
persons and the most effective strategies to combat the problem.
Participants will earn the specifics of the US anti-trafficking law,
HR 3244, the victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act and
the UN Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in
Persons, Especially Women and Children.
Role of the Media in US Society
-- To introduce the participants to the ways in which American
journalism contributes to and promotes the democratic process. The
project includes debates about ethics, accuracy and journalistic
integrity, regulations governing access to government information,
journalism training, and developments in media technology.
Administration of Justice
-- Participants
will examine various aspects of the U.S. legal system including
court administration and civil and criminal independent judiciary
systems.
Anti-corruption and Accountability in Government and Business
--
This project addresses the meaning and implications of ethical
standards and how they are defined, monitored and enforced in
government and business.
Transparencies and Civic Participation in Government
–
This program
will explore the decentralized and self-regulating nature of U.S.
federalism, its systems of checks and balances, and the role played
by citizens, the media and civil society in ensuring transparency
and accountability in government.
Grassroots Democracy for Young Leaders
–
This program
will explore the U.S. foreign policy decision-making process and
issues relevant to the Western Hemisphere. The program will examine
the importance of students and young leaders in public policy
development and activism.
Infectious Diseases and HIV/AID
–
This project
will present an overview of the global infectious disease threat and
its impact on economic growth and development, public health
political stability, social cohesion, and national and regional
security.
