15 January 2002 U.S. Embassy Sponsors Visit by English Language Expert SANTO DOMINGO – As a way to support the initiatives of the Dominican government in improving education and reducing poverty, the United States Embassy, through its Press and Programs Office, is sponsoring the visit of a U.S. expert in English education. Becky George will work for a semester for the Secretariat of State for Education, developing an administrative and methodology plan for the English program which trains 3,000 public school teachers. The announcement was made during a press conference given by the Secretary of Education and Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Milagros Ortiz Bosch, together with the Cultural Attaché of the United States mission, Nicole Conn. The Press and Programs Section of the United States Embassy, in collaboration with the Dominican-American Cultural Institute in Santo Domingo and the Dominican-American Cultural Center in Santiago, have established a program to improve teaching techniques and English language skills for teachers of this assigment in the public school system. This program is supported by the Dominican private sector and the Secretariat of State for Education. Mrs. George´s visit is framed within these innitiatives and will contribute to raising the teaching level of these teachers. Professor George has advanced studies of English as a second language from the University of Portland, with a solid experience in the development of programs and methodology in teaching. She speaks fluent Spanish and as a Fulbright student, attended the Universidad Autónoma in Tamaulipas, Mexico. |
