U.S. Embassy and Ministry of High Education, Science and Technology Start Accreditation Program

SANTO DOMINGO – In collaboration with the Secretaria de Estado de Educacion Superior, Ciencia Y Tecnologia (SEESCYT), the US Embassy is sponsoring the visit of Dr. Teofilo Ramos, Director of Institutional Effectiveness at the Monterrey Institute of Technology (Mexico), to lead a seminar on obtaining accreditation in the US. The two-day seminar is sponsored by the SEESCYT and the US Embassy to assist schools in obtaining accreditation with the U.S. Southern Association of Schools (SACS). The seminar, opened by Dr. Andres Reyes, the Minister of SEESCYT, and Deputy Chief of Mission Janice Jacobs, will be the first step in this process for these universities.

During the opening ceremony, Ms. Jacobs stating that the Dominican Republic has made excellent progress in establishing economic growth and democratic institutions and that education was the key to further success. Though it would be a lengthy process, she said, accreditation was worth the investment: “Accreditation can bring to the Dominican Republic a world class education system that can develop professionals that will make this country a competitive nation.” Jacobs added.

The Monterrey Institute of Technology in Mexico has been accredited in the US since 1950. Dr. Ramos used his expertise in the accreditation process to explain to Dominican universities the various phases. Dr. Ramos discussed the necessary university committees that must be formed and how each should operate, as well as timelines for preparing accreditation materials, pitfalls that might arise, and how to avoid or overcome them. Obtaining accreditation in the US, Dr. Ramos said, will offer expanded educational opportunities and heightened academic standards to Dominican faculty and students.
