Secretariat of State for Higher Education, Science, and Technology, and the United States Embassy Host Reception for International Guest and University Presidents

SANTO DOMINGO – Dr. Andrés Reyes, Secretary of State for Higher Education, Science, and Technology (SEESCYT), and Hans H. Hertell, United States Ambassador today, January 17, hosted a dinner in honor of Dr. Teófilo Ramos, Director of the Centro de Efectividad Institucional de Sistema of the Monterrey Technological Institute (Mexico).

Sponsored by the SEESCYT and the United States Embassy, Dr. Ramos is giving a two-day seminar – starting today – on the process of accreditation which Dominican universities must comply with if they wish to be accredited in the U.S. by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Ambassador Hertell, in remarks made during the ceremony, said that “A quality education constitutes the indispensable basis which will guarantee that Dominican society will have everything it deserves, including an efficient public administration, a competitive private sector, a strong and independent judicial system, and world class medical services.”

The dinner, offered in the Juan Carlos Restaurant, was attended by the presidents, directors, and rectors of Dominican universities who are interested in initiating the process to obtain the accreditation of their respective universities in the United States.

Dr. Reyes thanked the university officials for their interest in improving the country´s higher education system, and praised the work of Dr. Ramos for the excellent contributions he has made to this complex process.

Dr. Ramos, from the Monterrey Technological Institute in Mexico, speaking about his experience in this accreditation process, explained to the representatives of Dominican universities the various phases that his institution had to go through in order to receive accreditation in the United States. His institute has been accredited in the U. S. since 1950.
