The two-day seminar is being sponsored by the SEESCYT and the United States Embassy in order to offer assistance to Dominican universities interested the in obtaining accreditation with the state accreditation entity, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The seminar, inaugurated by Dr. Andrés Reyes, Secretary of State of SEESCYT, and by the Chargé d´Affaires of the Embassy, Janice Jacobs, will be the first step in this process.

During the opening ceremony, Mrs. Jacobs said that the Dominican Republic had made very significant progress by establishing economic growth and democratic institutions, and added that education is the key to future success. Although it is a long process, she said, accreditation is worth the investment. Accreditation can bring the Dominican Republic a world-class educational system which can develop professionals who will make the Dominican Republic a competitive nation.

The Monterrey Technological Institute in Mexico has been accredited in the United States since 1950. Dr. Ramos used his experience to explain to the Dominican universities the various phases of the process. Dr. Ramos spoke of the need for university committees which must be formed, and how each one must operate, as well as the calendar of goals for the preparation of the materials for accreditation, the obstacles which can be presented, and how to avoid them or overcome. The obtaining of accreditation in the United States, Dr. Ramos noted, will offer more educational opportunities and better academic standards for Dominican professors and students.
