New Procedure for Issuing United States Passports

SANTO DOMINGO - As of April 8, 2002, United States citizens residing abroad or travellers who require a new United States passport will be issued a passport which includes a digital-image photo and other security features.

United States Embassies and Consulates will transfer the function of issuing passports to the passport agency in the United States. This will increase the processing time in some Embassies and Consulates. Nevertheless, the State Department is committed to ensuring that United States citizens receive safer documents in a prudent time period. Citizens are advised to request the renewal of their passport ahead of time prior to the expiration date.

The Embassies and consulates will continue to issue passports in emergency cases. These passports will have a limited validity, and will not be extended. Their bearers, nevertheless, will have to change their limited passports for a passport of total validity. The new passports will have a photo with digital image. The corresponding application must be made through a passport agency in the United States or through the Consular Section of the United States Embassy abroad.
