6 June 2002 United States Ambassador Visits Board of Directors of Fundación Institucionalidad y Justicia (FINJUS) SANTO DOMINGO – The United States Ambassador, Hans H. Hertell, paid a courtesy visit this Thursday to the Fundación Institucionalidad y Justicia (FINJUS) where, after a brief introduction of the members of the FINJUS Board of Directors, they spoke about the programs of justice reform and economic competitiveness which the institution is currently carrying out at present. During the encounter, participants commented on the challenges of the process of democratic institutionalization, the strengthening of the Rule of Law, and the respect for human rights in the Dominican Republic. Ambassador Hertell pointed out the efforts made by FINJUS to promote judicial reform and institutional strengthening in the Dominican Republic, and repeated the commitment of the United States government to support Dominican initiatives in this regard. Among the most important reforms mentioned were the reform of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the installation of the office of the Ombudsman, the promulgation of a Law of Career of the Public Ministry, and the implementation of the law of the Office of Public Defender and Police Reform. FINJUS was established in 1990 and its Board is made up of well known jurists and business people such as Carlos Guillermo León, Elena Viyella, Fabiola Medina, Iraima Carriles, Mary Fernández, Wellington Ramos Messina, Eduardo Grullón, Irving Redondo Carbonell, Manuel Tavares, Rafael del Toro, Andrés Marranzini, Manuel Bergés Chupani, Raymundo Haché, Práxedes Castillo, Luis Molina Achecar, José Ramón Vega Battle, Georges Santoni Recio, Manuel Diez, Jesús Moreno, Antonio Espín, and Carlos Salcedo. |
