New Fees for U. S. Passports

The U.S. Department of State, through the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic, announces that as of August 19, 2002, new fees for U.S. passports will go into effect.

The last time there was a change in U.S. passport fees was in February 1998. By law, the U.S. Department of State must recover the true costs of consular services, including the issuance of passports, through customer fees.

The new worldwide schedule of fees for the issuance of U.S. passports is based on a fee study conducted by an independent company under the supervision of the State Department. These new fees reflect the true costs of consular services offered in 2002. It is necessary to periodically adjust the fees to maintain the quality of services and to implement technological advances to improve passport security features.

In the Dominican Republic, the new fee for adults (16 years or older) requesting a U.S. passport for the first time will be US$85 or RD$1,530. This fee covers the costs involved to verify the identity of the applicant, to guarantee that the application forms are properly completed, and to collect the proper fees, among other services.

Simultaneously, as of August 19, 2002 the fee for adult renewal of U.S. passports valid for 10 years will be US$55 o RD$990.

The new fee to issue U.S. passports to minors under 16 years of age valid for a 5-year period will be US$70 o RD$1,260.

Downloadable application forms for both new and renewal U.S. passports are available from the following web page: http://travel.state.gov.

The Office of American Citizen Services of the Consular Section in Santo Domingo receives passport applications from 7:30-9:30 a.m., Monday-Friday.
