U.S. Embassy and National Drug Council Sign Agreement

Today, September 27, 2002, the United States Ambassador, Hans H. Hertell, and the President of the National Drug Council, Bonaparte Gautreaux Piñeiro, signed an agreement of understanding between the Governments of the United States and the Dominican Republic.

Under the terms of the agreement, the United States Government will provide $1.33 million dollars in funds for anti-narcotics and law enforcement programs in the Dominican Republic. These programs will be carried out during the next fiscal year, from October 1, 2002, to September 30, 2003.

The U.S. Department of State’s International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Bureau (also known as INL) will be the entity in charge of providing the funds. The projects benefiting from this program will include the canine and anti-fugitive, border communications, port security, and anti-illegal immigration units of the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD). In addition to these programs, funds will be provided for the training of DNCD personnel, and the mixed border units made up of members of the National Police and the National Drug Control Directorate.

Over the last five years the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Bureau has dedicated more than $2.1 million dollars to support anti-narcotics and law enforcement programs in the Dominican Republic. This is a clear indication of the close collaboration of efforts between the Governments of the United States and the Dominican Republic against narcotics and in favor of law enforcement.
